An ancient tradition celebrated to mark the bond between brothers and sisters and a symbol of protection extended by brothers to their sister. Sisters tie silk threads or ornate jewelry on their brothers' wrists as a sign of their affection and receive gifts in return.

Janmashtami - Lord Krishna's birth anniversary, is celebrated in August all over the country with temple festivities. Devotees throng Krishna temples all over the country and celebrate the birth of the much loved Indian deity.
Ganesh Chaturthi
The birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god is particularly celebrated in Mumbai, where the immersion of the idol in the sea is an activity and spectacle that all Mumbaikars cherish. A special three-day long tourist festival is organized on the occasion and festivities in South India have a unique regional flavor.
Dussehra
Dussehra marks the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana and good over evil. Gigantic effigies of the ten-headed Ravana and his brothers are set aflame amidst bursting of crackers and the country come alive with a carnival-like ambiance.
Durga Puja
Durga Puja is special in Bengal and is celebrated at the same time as Dussehra. The occasion commemorates the homecoming of the Goddess Durga and victory of good over evil. Her return home is marked by the immersion of her idols in water bodies.

Guru Nanak Jayanti also known as 'Gurupurab', is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak - founder of the Sikh faith. The celebrations at Amritsar are especially impressive.
